Linsanity 1-on-1: Mike Breen Sits Down with JLin

One of the best interviews ever with JLin, especially in regards to Linsanity. The excitement I had during this stretch was like watching Jeremy lead a team to the NBA Championship. The Nets game, the Lakers game, and the Toronto game were all like winning game 7 of a NBA Championship.

This is Life

Time flies and life is a blur. As I sit back and reflect, all I can say is this past year has been so crazy. The NBA and China’s relationship soured, my friend Godfrey suddenly died filming on set, last year’s Beijing Ducks captain G-Man was diagnosed w a terminal disease midseason and passed away, the coronavirus became a global health emergency, and Kobe/Gianna/7 others passed away in a tragic accident. The CBA season’s been postponed indefinitely and I’m on standby, training and staying ready if the season resumes. Since last summer I haven’t had much to say on social media, but I felt very strongly about this post. Today isn’t guaranteed. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Nothing in life is guaranteed. Live life to the fullest, pursue the best version of yourself. If you aren’t content along the journey, you won’t be content at your destination. I learned this lesson the hard way. Find joy, find purpose, find truth. Love radically, serve generously. Life is too short and too precious for time to be wasted. I’ve lived in China this past season and now being back on US soil, I’m saddened by the racist comments regarding the virus in China. There are real people suffering and real heroes working around the clock in service to others - please don’t let your fear or ignorance rob you of seeing that. This world needs more compassion and empathy. We are all imperfect humans - we all need grace. You have one life to live, focus on what really matters in life. And pray that God blesses us with the chance to see tmrw πŸ™πŸΌ

The Next Chapter...

Honestly, it's been a really hard few months for me. Watching Jeremy go through his struggles was so sad and disheartening. My interest in Pro basketball has pretty much disappeared since the news of no more Jeremy Lin in the NBA. I'll still try to follow his games in China but I just find it really hard to get excited about the CBA.

We've been so fortunate to have 9 years of something to look forward to at the beginning of each season. There were times during his career when Jeremy knew he was one of if not the best player on the floor during an NBA game! And it was such a joy to behold. But at the end with Toronto, his confidence was shot, he looked broken physically and mentally.

Now, with a year to actually train instead of rehab, Jeremy has a chance to gain back confidence and regain his explosiveness. If he can also get his 3 point % into the 40's, he'll have a chance to come back to the NBA in March after the end of the CBA season. That's the hope and that's what I'm looking forward to this year.

"The First" - NYT Article re JLin

Good article in the NY Times today about Jeremy.
Seven years after “Linsanity” took over the N.B.A., and months after he became the first Asian-American player to win a championship ring, Jeremy Lin has signed with the Beijing Shougang Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association, the team announced on Tuesday.
There was a chilly N.B.A. free agency market for Lin, 31, who split last season between the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors. He played only 27 minutes for the Raptors in the playoffs, including just one mop-up minute in the finals.
But to his legions of fans, he always meant more than his on-court numbers. He is one of the few players of Asian-American descent to make it to the N.B.A., and the first to become an international phenomenon, in 2012, when he went on a stunning run for the New York Knicks. Once overlooked by scouts, he has earned more than $65 million in his career.
JLin has always been about more than just basketball.  Years from now, I'm sure we'll hear even more about the difficulties he faced in being one of the first Asian-Americans in the modern era to play in the NBA.

In the meantime, we'll continue to follow his career in China.  And, who knows, there may be another opportunity in the NBA before he hangs up his shoes and calls it a career.

Waiting on JLin...found Keston and Collin

Love this Lecrae video!:

As the wait continues, I've discovered (actually started following these guys a little earlier) a few other up and coming Asian American Athletes.

Keston Hiura is from SoCal and is half Japanese and half Chinese. He is a stud! Definitely All-Star potential and possible Rookie of the Year.

Collin Morikawa also from SoCal and is on the rise!

There are two half Asian American basketball players who will be in the NBA. Jalen Green's mom is Filipino and Johnny Juzang's mom is Vietnamese. But it's been 10 years and I still don't see any pure Asian American basketball players on the horizon. This shows you how unique and amazing Jeremy Lin is. Maybe you could even call him an Asian American basketball Unicorn.

Free Agency and what to expect?

With Free Agency beginning tomorrow, Jeremy will most likely be heading to a new team. I'm just hoping and praying for one more opportunity for him to get into a rotation. No preference or expectations but just somewhere that he can get minutes. This could be a long process so we may have to be very patient.

The "Ring"

Deep insights:

Just got back from vacation and had some time to process this Championship journey for Jeremy. For me, it's been very bittersweet. I'm happy for Jeremy that he's been able to reach his final goal of winning an NBA ring. However, as a long time die-hard Lin fan, it's been very tough to find true joy in it. I think the main reason is knowing Jeremy is not an end of the bench player at this point in his career. This could have been the perfect opportunity to show the world that he can still play and be a rotational player on a Championship team. However, circumstances where such that things just didn't work out. We've talked about it and Jeremy has as well ad nauseam.

It was great to hear in this podcast his extreme motivation for next season.  With the craziness that is the NBA, it should be another unpredictable season and who knows where he will wind up. With one healthy season under his belt and a short offseason coming up, Jeremy knows now more than ever what he needs to bring to a team next season. The "Ring" chapter is complete. Now, on to the next...
