Jeremy's Turns 25

Yes, Jeremy turns 25 today.

Here are stats of players at age 25:

Per 36 min:

Steve Nash (1999-00)
11.3
6.4
2.8
.9

Mike Conley (2012-13)
15.3
6.4
2.9
2.3

Raymond Felton (2009-10)
13.2
6.1
3.9
1.7

Jeremy Lin (2012-13) @ 24 years old
14.9 pts.
6.8 asts.
3.4 rebs.
1.8 stls.

It's funny how Conley's nunbers this past season are pretty much the same as Lin's. However, everyone feels that Lin had a terrible year and Conley had a great one. With Jeremy coming into the season 100% healthy, I'm expecting at least a 10% increase across the board.

Keep your head up. Mike Conley is being paid the same amount as you over the next 2 years, so you're certainly not overrated or overpaid. Do tune out the haters.

  4. Vying For the Rockets' Starting Point Guard Spot (i.e., after Lin is traded, since they're trying).

Patrick Beverley better watch out! I think the Rockets will be grooming Isaiah Canaan to compete for the STARTING SPOT with Beverley. Canaan is one of the two(2) brand new rookie point guards that the Rockets have acquired this Summer in preparation for trading Jeremy Lin. Before the Lin trade they now have a whooping 5 PGs (Their roster stands at 18, so they have to unload at least 3 players before the start of the regular season).

At such a young age with no NBA experience yet, I don't think Canaan has to compete for the first backup PG spot with Aaron Brooks for very long. He looks smart, sounds smart and is full of swagger ( Q&A With Isaiah Canaan with Jason Friedman, Rockets.com). And the Rockets drafted him for the explosive shooting talent he's known for; and he said he's worked hard on his superb physique while he was still in college. And - Canaan is mentored by non other than the smartest and hardest working PG in the league in Chris Paul (Also, Paul is the dirtiest PG! The kind of cheating that the NBA allows only for superstars who least should need to). By the middle of the season, this youngster could be the starter over Beverley. Beverley needs to work hard and smart to keep his starting spot with the Rockets. I'm guessing that the Rockets 4th PG (after Lin trade) is there just to get his stats pumped up for a short period for the Rockets to "sell", which has been one of Morey's noticeable modus operandi.

      Delete
    4. Etane,

Yes he does look the Morey's type. Morey sure know how to make his players stressed out and anxious! I don't know if excessive amount of that would make players work harder. Most NBA players already work so darn hard; not much time off. I guess one could always hire a better trainer. They sure earn their money. I feel sorry for guys who make less than $2 million per year - they should voluntarily raise Parson's salary or give him some endorsements.

      Delete
    5. Solidz75,

You were pretty close. Isaiah Canaan is represented by a top 10 agent (Mark Bartelstein) from a top 10 agency (Priority Sports): http://hoopshype.com/agents.htm

    7. Even if Canaan is able to shoot as well as Steph Curry, I doubt the Rockets would hand him the starting PG job. At this point he is kind of one dimensional. He needs a lot of work on defense and general NBA PG skills. If he's able to run the offense half-way decent AND shoot the 3 like Curry, the Rockets would be foolish not to start him over Lin. As a Lin fan, I'd want him to be the starter only if he's the best PG on the team. Barring a trade or injury, Lin should be the best PG on this season's roster without a doubt.

  9. Happy bday, Jeremy!

Along the same vein as this post, Morey wrote in a reddit Q&A: (btw, I've never been a Morey hater, I view him neutrally in terms of effect on Lin's game. The people that stifled Lin the most last year were 1. McHale 2. Harden).

"It is amazing to me that all the time I encounter people feeling negative about Jeremy's season with us. I have chalked this up to:
-- he started off slow, mostly do to getting 100% back from injury
-- very high, unrealistic expectations after his time in New York
-- had a rough ending in the playoffs, again due to injury
-- people generally remember starts & ends more than anything else
-- people generally compare things to their expectations when forming opinions versus look at the big picture

Last year was Jeremy's 1st full year in the league. Essentially his rookie year. If last season would have been his rookie year and he never would have played in New York, right now people would be appropriately talking about him incessantly as one of the top young rookie stars in the league. He was the starting point guard on a playoff team in West at age 24!!!"

Morey probably watched how Taiwan and China celebrated Lin's birthday plus DHoward singing Happy Birthday and wanted in on the action. That speaks volume. It means Lin won't be traded before the season starts.

I can't believe there are still people naive enough to believe morey is blameless. Where do people think Lin got the idea that he was to be the face of the franchise to turn this team around before the season started?

      Delete
    6. from people lin was allegedly seeking approval and validation from i guess.

      Delete
    7. Nope. It was Morey 100%. He is the one who used that pitch to get Lin. I don't think Lin is arrogant enough to see himself that way at all. Calling him a foundational piece. How this will be Lin's team. Go back to all the quotes morey was spewing out of his lying mouth when Lin was signed. I remember feeling quite excited myself that Lin will be the primary focus of the team. Effer lied.

      Delete
    8. oh damn i got it wrong. then why did jeremy say his expectations were unrealistically high when it was set by the head lard in charge?

      Delete
    9. I'm sure Lin remembers Morey's lie.

After saying how Lin will be an essential part of the future and the leaser of the franchise, he took all that away whn he got harden.

Lin was expecting himself to be the leader and play his game without the restrictions imposed by melo in the Knicks, but the team didn't cater to Lin at all after harden came over. In fact they belittle his role.

This is why Lin became frustrated. That's why he felt his goal to become linsanity was unrealistic and felt like shit and helpless.

I think in some ways, this was implied in his testimonial. Like the classy guy he is, he is not going to blame others and himself. But we all know what happened and why Lin was frustrated.

I'm just looking forward to his response when he gets back. A lot will be clarified.

      Delete
    10. yup jeremy didn't set his expectations too high. he was simply lied to. and he didn't want to blame anyone during his testimony. so, he blames himself. mature? yes. realistic? not sure. therapeutic? maybe.

There are still quite a few EXTREMELY NAIVE people even amongst some Lin fans that come to this board (maybe they are youths)- even with a mountain of evidence that were presented over the year, citing their interviews, Lin-dissing sound bites after games meant for "naive or stupid people", etc. (Sigh, NO I will NOT provide this "proof" over the year now). Apparently they don't even bother to read most other people's posts here: Otherwise how could they think of Morey so kindly after all that Lin went through both on and off of the basketball court last season. SMH LMAO LOL. Both Morey and McHale have been positively reptilian against Lin!

      Delete
    14. ztrta - you have some very intelligent people posting in this forum who think morey is upstanding in regards to the way lin is treated.

    15. Etane, that's true.

And I forgot to add: Some people DO NOT follow the topic or well informed either because they aren't that interested or they just don't have enough time - which is fine and understandable. BUT what bother me is that THEY THEN ACT LIKE THEY ARE WELL INFORMED ON THE SPECIFIC TOPICS they chime in !!! I, for example is well informed because I had the interest and TIME to keep up with everything Rockets since last season (even though I lead a very active life).

Morey says one nice thing about lin and some people automatically assume Morey thinks highly of Lin, that Mchale was the mastermind behind Lin's marginalization last season. Even after Lin's testimonial, they don't see it.

Btw who cares about spell grammar check. U know how hard it is to edit your posts on this particular site on your phone

      Delete
    20. I didn't say Morey was blameless. I don't think he helped Lin out last year (say, by forcing McHale to involve Lin more). But he also didn't purposely stifle Lin's game like McHale. I think Morey just let McHale coach however he wanted, that's why I view him as neutral.

When Morey gave his pitch to Lin, it's not like he had a secret Harden deal and was lying to Lin at the time. If the Rockets roster remained the exact same as when Lin was signed, Lin probably would have been the featured player. But when Harden landed in Morey's lap, it completely changed the Rockets' strategy for the year. To think that a GM would forgo an opportunity to acquire and feature an all-star level player just to keep a prior promise... now that's naive.

It's the nature of all businesses these days. There's no loyalty, it's all about right now. Hypothetically, if Morey could trade Dwight + Harden for Lebron, he'd do it too, forget about whatever promises he made to them. Coaches always claim that starters can't lose their spot to injury, but if the backup does well, guess what...? And it goes both ways too. A player can leave a team and city that has done nothing but adore him and offer him max, for a bigger media market and more endorsement money. Don't be naive, it's the nature of the business.

      Delete
    21. Morey forgot to mention that Harden's a year younger than Lin...

      Delete
    22. Real.. You are arguing from a clutchfan centric point of view. We are looking at it from a Lin Centric stand point. Morey is a lying piece of shit. Yeah call it business but I'd argue that he just gave up in him after preseason games.

U can think what u want but stop posting Morey's compliments as a proof that he loves Lin. That is what I call naive.

      Delete
    23. real-dsb ag acts like he or she is Morey's agent, who doesn't seem to realize (or want to admit) the main reason Morey went on the Reddit AMA, yet again, was because he knew questions about Lin would come up. He put Lin in a positive light to make him more tradeable by highlighting facts that many people already knew (JUST COUNT how many headlines are floating that say "Morey Defends Jeremy Lin"... It's also PR). Morey-McHale team has been doing that since late last season, after all Harden-related agendas were accomplished. The problem is that their "changed" attitudes toward Lin don't match what they publicly stated/implied about Lin during the season. No wonder it's a hard sell. The solution is to undersell to get the job done. The alternative is to pad Lin's stats for a while first, but there are costs involved there also.

This real-dsb ag has conveniently CHANGED THE SUBJECT of the thread to rebut other people with, "It's the nature of all businesses these days. There's no loyalty, it's all about right now. Hypothetically, if Morey could trade Dwight + Harden for Lebron, he'd do it too...." YOU'RE CORRECT about that; that's how NBA business is done (how could we not notice!) but that's ANOTHER SUBJECT, which, by the way, NO OTHER TEAM HAS EVER TREATED A PLAYER LIKE JEREMY LIN just because he was going to be traded. If Howard, Harden, Asik or Parsons were to be traded, the Rockets would NOT treat any of them the way they've treated Lin. Lin was treated so weirdly and badly - and dissed him in public consistently** (though sporadically) - BECAUSE THEY HAD ANOTHER *UNIQUE* AGENDA, an agenda which I and many others here have pointed out since early last season.

** I put *constantly* because I've noticed that criticizing players in public once in a while by coaches isn't unusual.

    24. I find it strange that some people point fingers at McHale at first, then Ho Chen(poor Ho Chen, is he the acting GM or the newly appointed CEO? Does he carry enough weight to topple the whole scheming?) but defend Morey. smh.

      Delete
    25. I think we all pretty much agree Morey is not blameless.
McHale has the sin of commission while Morey has the sin of ommission.

But both McHale's actions and Morey's inactions say one thing. Lin is just a role player in their mind, not a future All-Star.

So Lin in his limited role just needs to open their eyes by staying confident and showing he can do it all as a lethal shooter or playmaker. He needs to open their eyes and other GMs that he is a future All-Star.

"This real-dsb ag has conveniently CHANGED THE SUBJECT of the thread"

I didn't post Morey's compliments as proof that he loves Lin (the only thing I said about Morey is that he is neutral towards Lin). Actually, I posted those statements because they reinforce what JLinfan#1's original post was about, that Lin had a decent year but was viewed negatively by many, whereas other players had similar production and were viewed as a good year.

  11. Why compare their age 25 stats (which are generally better than age 24) with Lin's age 24 stats? Might as well compare apples to apples and use everyone's age 24 stats. As you can see, Lin outperformed them all at age 24, in his first year as a full time starter.

Nash: age 24, 98-99, 1st year as full time starter
Conley: age 24, 11-12, 5th year as full time starter
Felton: age 24, 08-09, 4th year as full time starter
Lin: age 24, 12-13, 1st year as full time starter

Per 36 stats at age 24:

    Nash: 8.9 pts, 6.2 ast, 3.2 reb, 1.0 stl, 36% fg, 37% 3pt
    Conley: 13.0 pts, 6.7 ast, 2.6 reb, 2.3 stl, 43% fg, 38% 3pt
    Felton: 13.6 pts, 6.5 ast, 3.6 reb, 1.5 stl, 41% fg, 29% 3pt
    Lin: 14.9 pts, 6.8 ast, 3.4 reb, 1.8 stl, 44% fg, 34% 3pt

    2. There may be some inflation to Lin's per36 stats due to faster pace of Rox (I don't know what the pacing of the other teams were, but just saying).

But Lin's numbers are very impressive considering that he was not the main ball handler (handling it less than Harden, and sometimes even less than Parsons as well as the backup PG), not to mention having to pass to Asik with the Butterball (it's a brand of turkey!) hands.

Keep in mind that Conley (4th pick in draft) was considered a draft bust when he first played in the NBA. That's also true for Chauncey Billups (3rd pick in draft). The PG role perhaps takes more time than any other to learn, so it isn't surprising that PGs make take more time to develop and break out. Indeed we have seen Lin making substantial improvements to his passing skills and reads of the defense since his NY days.

      Delete
    3. Now that Conley is respected (post-season success is so much a part of that, as opposed to Lin's post-season absence), it is remarkable that Lin's regular-season numbers look so similar to Conley's but Lin's season is considered a bust. Not just a bust, but somehow 'proof' that Linsanity was a bizarre anomaly and that it was a fluke all along. Just goes to show how the boxscore can be the same but the perception is totally driven by the narrative.

      Delete
    4. I don't know what the stats on usage are for Nash and Conley and Felton, but Lin was the lowest usage starting PG in the NBA and was lower than even a few reserve pgs.

Also remember that Lin has played for more teams in more systems than any of those players have. That gives him less continuity with a single team than the other players had, yet he outperforms them anyway.

Remember that Lin's also negatively impacted by poor officiating, horrendously bad scorekeeping, and arguably poor coaching. He's not respected the way those other players were even though Lin has significantly more game.

      Delete
    5. Post season success plays a big part of how a player is perceived by the general public who do not follow many games -- and I think that's not unfair.

    15. psalm. i make you a promise. and i don't break promises like solidz does.

if you take khuang to gay conversion therapy and he's successfully converted to a straight man, i will NEVER again thrash chrisitanity.

    16. I need not enlist others to fight on my behalf when everybody here can simply watch you FIGHT YOUR OWN SEXUAL URGES, Solidz75.

I think it's great that we are openly discussing this issue, for your frustrated sexuality is why you as a LOH have come onto this board to flame Lin and Lin's fans.

You have my full understanding and suppport, Solidz75. Even though I do not have any inkling of what it's like to be attracted to "man bacon" like you are, I still can appreciate your struggles.

Honestly, I would prefer that you find peace and self sexual acceptance in your life. You know that I as your seemingly most mortal enemy here would applaud you if you came to that understanding.

Look, you don't have to lash out at other members here in order to express your sexual frustration. Just be yourself and don't flame people here. If you treat yourself with respect by honoring your inner urges, others here including myself will like and respect you as well!

    17. How about you just stop trashing Christianity without using your nemesis to motivate you, Etane?

How about you leave a bystander like Psalm234 out of your homoerotic suggestions?

How about you just get out of the closet or at least stop peeling your bananas for people here to see, Etane?

    21. I sincerely hope Lin doesn't come to any forums includimg this.
He needs to shut all the negativity out an figure out for himself what he can do. I don't see how twitter, clutchfan, etc could b considered helpful in anyways. Why does he even read all the negative tweets anyways?

      Delete
    22. I can guarantee you if Lin is a normal person he'd be curious to check out this site or twitter feed once in a while. After all, this JLinFan#1 site has supported him since before Linsanity broke out and he mentioned it in one of his old interviews.

Definitely put a different context if Lin was reading all of this above us, right?
I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to stick around that much negativity either.

    24. C'mon, Etane.

Don't give me so much credit.

I'm just a basketball nobody who doesn't work for the NBA. I WISH I could work for thw NBA as some sort of basketball person.

Personally I see Kevin McHale as a mediocre head coach who doesn't know how GOOD he has it with Jeremy Lin. Daryl Morey to me is a basketball novice who had some inkling of Lin's winning ways and is struggling with the idea that Lin indeed is as good as the Rockets' secret statisticians (and franchise owner) said.

The reason I could never work for McHale or Morey is because I'd tell them exactly I wrote here if they asked me my opinion of Lin!

  14. Ha, ha, Clippers home game vs. Rockets costs around $400 at a "decent" (not that great) seat. Don't mind paying but having to beat the traffic hours to get there is something I don't want to do. Without at least a decent seating, it's better to watch through League Pass.

    ReplyDelete

    3. Come on now, it's not fair to hijack eb's nice thread too. Pls bring the fighting back up there so others can read in peace.

I was going to say CA tickets are way too expensive, eb. You can go to the Suns game 4x in the first 10-20 rows if you find the right deal in stubhub. LeaguePass all the way for that price!

    4. Sac games ar cheap. Second row for 180.

    5. Watching in person wise, for me, baseball is more fun and cheaper, even though I like basketball more than baseball. Regular season basketball games are boring.

And 180 is not cheap for a cheap family like mine :)

    7. I agree, psalm234.

eb5attorney, I would be honored if you ever decided to join psalm234 and me at a Lin Suns home game (the Phx crowd LOVES Lin, seemingly more than Houston does).

We've had our differences in the past, eb5attorney. But I'm willing to put all that aside and start new. You know that I truly respect your basketball intelligence and learn a lot from you. I'd love to talk to you and learn from you in person.

psalm234, we could meet at a restaurant before the game at the Chinese Cultural Center. I'd love to meet you and your family. Besides, I get engrossed in the game when I'm in the arena and have trouble shifting into "social mode".

Let's not let the trolls deface this Lin fan forum, guys.

Actually, the arena is cold. The Suns staff told me that they do not heat the arena during regular season games in our so-called Phoenix "winter".

Anyway, I meant what I said about respecting you and looking forward to learning more from you.

I suggest Etane, Solid, KHuang and I watch Lin game together, take a photo together and then argue about the game.

    19. I was about to buy a $400 ticket to see Clippers and Rockets, but the very thought of Lin getting benched by Mac for Bev stopped me from clicking the "buy" button. I also saw long time ago Shaq play in Honolulu, and players actually appear to play better on TV than in real life.

Out of all sports venues, the most worthwhile money wise is tennis ticket which allow you to view practice matches and then one or two good matches very close up, especially during 3rd or 4th rounds.

I feel sincerity between J and Novak's friendship.Aside from Landry Fields and David Lee, he is one of those people who sincerely like Jeremy as a person and respects his game, even if they aren't team mates anymore.C'mon, Novak said,"Jeremy is the sweetest guy in the team" (Knicks days),that statement will probably burn Novak or put his masculinity under scrutiny.

I like it when I get slammed by impressions (ex.,"Oh I thought you were this stick-in-the mud type, but you're actually fun and crazy!"),but with Novak I see his friendship with J is genuine, plus he probably feels that Jeremy was the only team mate who believed in his game, even if fans scrutinize him for not playing defense or one-dimensional scoring.

      Shu-How: I am Lin Shu-How.

Shu-How: I am studying English. Do you know the definition of the term "double-double"?
