Linsanity at Sundance

After losing to the Nuggets, the Rockets seemed to have gone back to playing better team basketball. You can see the difference when the ball is moving on offense, and there helping each other defense. When this is happening JLin gets in a flow and they are just a much better team. Let's see if this continues as they step up in competition on the road at the Jazz this Monday.

But before that, Jeremy and a few of his teammates will get to check out "Linsanity" the documentary:

The movie, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, has been getting rave reviews:

    1. Hopefully we all will be able to see it soon if some company picks it up. I'm actually surprised there's no news of companies bidding for it. If it wins an award at Sundance, there will definitely be a run for it.

      Delete
    2. I'm guessing that if a company picked the film up, the guys that filmed it would be losing out on profits, DVD sales. Distribution becomes more complicated etc

      Delete
    3. Basically more control over distribution/ profits/ how it's marketed but with a much smaller budget? Just my guess, otherwise someone would have picked it up by now.

      Delete
    4. Yes, definitely but distribution and marketing are really expensive so that's why they want to be picked up ala 'Better Luck Tomorrow'. Speaking of which, Evan Jackson Leong (the director) used to work for MTV, according to one of the articles posted here, so I'm surprised they're not jumping on this like they did BLT, given his connections.

But thinking about it more, Linsanity already has a fanbase and it's still fresh in people's minds (internationally even), so it wouldn't need too much marketing. Plus so much is done through social networking these days anyways. Well, a major company always makes things much easier because they already have everything set up, so I guess it's up to them whether they want to work more or work less.

    7. Read the kickstarter site. They talk about money thats needed to finish the movie:

      http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/linsanitymovie/linsanity-the-movie

I dont think theres a lot of money to be earned. I think these guys are just doing it because they think it should be done. Just think of how it started. According to his MTV interview Mr Leong went to film Jeremy on his free days. Back then - there was no Linsanity in sight.

You can support the project - minimum amount is 1 Dollar!

He's gunna blame it all on Lin of course...Because Lin laughed when he got ejected...

    1. Royce gave a very interesting interview the other day on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption. Most of the talk was about mental health issues, his advocacy work on those issues, and his own struggles with his issues and the Rockets and NBA. He actually seems like a thoughtful and well-spoken young man.

    3. Well, it's just a coincidence that this doc is about a bball star. Originally, it's supposed to be about an unknown player struggling to make it.

    4. That makes it even more exciting. A guy who had to overcome all sorts of obstacles to get where he is today... what a story.

We all have heard about the american dream. We have all heard of stories in which dumb, hatefull, greedy or ignorant people stand in the way of good people. How many people will watch this movie and realise that they are a-holes?

I cant help but think of that guy who wouldnt let Jeremy enter the MSG. He will watch this and say "damn - what an ignorant ass I was".

Its funny though. We all walk through life thinking that we are good and others are bad. But - theres that saying...

...theres an a-hole in every group. If you look around and you cant identify that a-hole - its probably you...

  5. Looks like they haven't yet reached their funding goals. :(
    Kickstarter: Linsanity The Movie

Hopefully we mere mortals have the chance to watch it. I'm positive that it'll do well in Asia and somehow make it to at least Amazon UK/Lovefilm. There've been instances where movies like John Carter perform exceeding well overseas than the domestic market. Love the costumes in this movie btw.

  6. I dont know what the problem is. Marketing maybe? JLin is so famous - cant they find anyone to back that project?

TV stations in china, taiwan, singapore, HK and the USA should be keen to airing that documentary. Lets asume that one TV channel from each country throws in 25 grand -> done. Since when can you get an awesome documentary that took so much time to make for so little money? It would be an awesome deal.

Since the documentary is good for JLins image his managers should consider throwing some money at the project, too. It would be well spent money - even for them.

How about JLins sponsors like Nike and Volvo? It is safe to asume that their star will be even more famous and valueable after that. They basicly get an upgrade of their star for free...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think,if a distributor will pick up the movie, his sponsors would be more than willing to give some funds. there's tons of inevitable product placements of Nike is all over the documentary, not sure with Volvo though.

      Delete
    2. Actually that's a great idea. Most dvds these days have some trailers prior to the start of the film. And they have disabled the ability to skip the trailers...So yeah...in place of trailers good advertising for both Nike and Volvo for every dvd sold.

      Delete
    3. Good points about the sponsors. A lot of money to be made here! It's weird given the good buzz around this that no major bigwigs are jumping in.

If no big companies jump in or they're not wanted, Jeremy has almost 1 million followers. If each one just donated $1, they would reach their Kickstarter goal pretty quickly!

      Delete
    4. The kickstarter pledge only needs somewhat around 100.000 Dollar. Each of JLins 1.000.000 followers would only have to give 10 cents.

      Delete
    5. We need to get this darn movie funded! I love Jeremy and his story! I'm good for $50..

  8. Lin's movie guys should do the "Bruce Lee":

find an Asian distributor and let this movie be globally watched by the entire planet outside the US.

I can just imagine Lin speaking in a dubbed Chinese voice, lip synched and all.

    1. That would probably be more successful. Distributors in the USA are simply no good when it comes to asian stuff.

One time I went to the states and my cousins took me to the cinema. They were talkig about a brand new Jackie Chan movie. When the movie started I realised that Ive watched it 4 years earlier...

  9. imo if the documentary needs funding, lin should just pay for it. and demand a higher portion of the profits too.

Also noticed lin was wearing what appears to be the same hyperfuse lows that he was sporting during the pre-season. I really hope they are not the same pair. He should have worn them out by now and is risking injury using them.

    6. with autographed game shoes going for more than 1k, there's no reason for lin to wear out any shoes. also think mj used to give away his shoes at the end of some games which probably helped his marketability. so lin should keep half his shoes and just give half of them away to some sick kid and make sure a reporter is around to witness this. at worst lin will have a closet full of shoes that he can give away to family and friends.

    1. Thats very good to know, however the most recent update i got from kickstarter says they have around 50k plus and still halfway from the target with 20 days left. Linsanity team still urging fans to support and pledge before deadline.

      Delete
    2. To be exact, they are 46% close to the goal. So just do the math, 46% times 117,0000 , that's what they lack and need to raise in 20 days.let's continue to share the world abt this and pray that fans would respond. In behalf of linsanity team, thanks!!!LOLOL

      Delete
    3. They're over halfway toward the goal of $117,000, with 2/3 the time left to go. Logically, they should make it by the deadline ... but the donations haven't been evenly spread, some days they get $10,000 a day, some days they only get $500 a day. So we don't know.

This film isn't even complete. The producers and crew weren't allowed access after Jeremy Lin became a star, up until the time he was let go to the Rockets.
They did not follow him to Taiwan or China over the summer.

This will probably require a sequel.

The director was offered 6-figures $$$ from ESPN for the exclusive rights to the movie -- but, with the condition of not showing the movie in any film festivals. As you know, the film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. The director is committed to making this documentary the best it can he. So he turned down the offer from ESPN to get feedback from the audience. He's hoping someone in Asia will eventually buy the movie rights.
