Rockets @ Spurs Game #29 2nd Half Game Thread

  1. You know, I was watching the first quarter, partially disgusted, partially with complete respect for the Spurs. I was thinking about how they all play with purpose and everything is so fluid. I was thinking I how it would be so nice for these Rox to develop into something like that one day (but with their own identity).

Then I watch how they come back in the second quarter, even taking the lead with one minute left in the half, and I think, one day might not be so far away.

This is a pretty good game so far for Lin. He has a solid line while being relatively quiet. I loved the charge he took from Duncan.

Waiting for Lin to explode. We have some ground to make up this quarter. Fourth quarter, baby. Would love to steal this one.

  4. Duncan is TOO GOOD.

But Jeremy and James are killin' it, too.

Parsons making some nice 3s to make up for blown layups and bad decisions.

  11. MY floor general Lin is taken out when he's just starting to get hot. I hope he comes back 4th Q

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lin is 4th Qtr guy. Let him rest and it will be about the 4th Qtr. The young team will win.

    ReplyDelete
  13. at this rate there will be no gas left for the OKC game haha

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jesus, they need to rest Harden. He's missing free throws and not playing D. Let lin and douglas play some minutes for god sake. Rox need Harden for the 4th quarter!

  31. When Jlin is playing D on Manu he cannot go under the screen he needs to go over the screen or else Manu will kill him on outside shooting.

Make no mistake: Duncan was the difference.

But as a coach, you can't go all balls out and play your starters that kind of minutes when you have 4 games in 5 days on the Road. McHale is a f'in Idiot. End of story.

      Delete
    2. at least Jeremy's 38 pts last game brought them to OT. if only McHale rested Jeremy on 3rd and brought him back mid-4th, there would be no OT and the Rockets could have bagged that game.

    3. Yes...but the rockets don't want to put it that way with the headline..that's I why I so pissed when I see the hardenless word in it...see...this time with harden in and score 33pts they still lost. Now I wonder what will they put this time...

  76. Jeremy gets an 'A-' grade from me.

Some careless TOs in the first (the others were great defense). Yeah, it would be nice to see him hit a couple more 3s, but he makes up for it with great finishes in traffic.

Also, FOUR steals tonight to offset the five TOs.

    1. Lin become aggressive too late.

    2. Duncan and the Spurs were just too good tonight. They would have beat ANY TEAM in the league (OKC, Heat, etc.).

Seriously, Duncan was amazing. Not just post-scoring but setting superb picks for Parker. We all saw what happened when Parker tried to take Lin without a screen -- Lin domination. But with Duncan screens? No one could stop Tony.

      Delete
    3. I sense Duncan really respects Jeremy. like, real respect for the kid.

      Delete
    4. yup Duncan is the man. Tony parker is one lucky PG.

    5. I agree. They're VERY similar players in a way.

Super well-rounded, super "intangibles" and very mature in their skills and relatively calm demeanor.

    6. If only JLin will pair up with a future Duncan like talent, then the NBA will be a definitely must watch event on TV.

      Delete
  77. at least they didn't give up. bad lost good game.

    ReplyDelete
  78. So pissed off they could have won this game.

Harden needs to start playing defense. He is such a blackhole on defense, minus the treys green drained on him over and over this would have been an easy Rox win.

Both Harden and Lin needs to visit Micah Lancaster and get some handles.

Lin needs to stop the damned high dribbles up the court, so annoying watching him doing the same dumb things and get cherry picked by defenders with long reach.

Stop low bounce passes to Asik, and why pass to him when he is surrounded by 3 bigs is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  79. lol at Douglas Lay-up. Oh well if they made those FTs this game could be more competitive but Pop might even have an answer to that. Pop's timely substitution are also keys.

  82. 5 tos from parson, 5 for Lin , 5 for harden. So even. Harden's turn over rate this season is so much higher than Lin but no body talks about it or notice it. I hope this game the haters fans don't go again to blame on Lin a turnover machine.

Yea..Lin got 21 pts. So what harden still got that high 33pts on the team. Harden is still the one rockets Fans will praise.

"Harden's turn over rate this season is so much higher than Lin but no body talks about it or notice it."

One possible reason that no one talks about it is that this statement is incorrect. Lin's TO rate is 13.5% of possessions; Harden's is 11.7%.

You can be a lover of Lin (and I know that you are) but when you write a post like this it makes you sound like a hater of Harden. Maybe you are, and that's your prerogative, but basing it on misinformation and then drawing sweeping conclusions on it makes you look foolish.

      Delete
    2. all I know is I look at their box score every game and their tos every game. You can say I am wrong or foolish but don't say I am a hater of Harde! I actually don't care what other people sees me! That is just the information I get and I am not dare to say it!

      Delete
    3. This is what I see in the box score from Oct 31 to the end of Nov. Of How I got the "biased and miss lead" information you said I have toward Harden.
      Lin: 4,3,3,2,4,0,2,2,3,3,3,5,4,3,3=44
      Harden:4,5,5,6,5,5,2,1,4,5,2,6,3,4,3=60

I will not go check the Dec again. but this is where I got from.

      Delete
    4. @lydia

You know, I was going to let this go, but since you obviously haven't:

My point is that the number of turnovers, which you are counting, is not the same as the turnover rate, which is what you have written in your first post. I get that there might be a language barrier, so I'm not going to harp on that.

Nevertheless, there is a distinction. Harden plays more minutes than Lin, so even assuming (yes, I know) they handle possessions equally, Harden would have more TO's if they had the same turnover *rate*.

But they don't, Lin is at 13.5% and Harden is at 11.7%. Harden's TO rate is not "so much higher"; it is in fact lower.

One last thing, don't put into quotes something that wasn't actually quoted. Very bad form. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt again, but "basing it on misinformation" does not equal "biased and miss lead".

Lemme show you how it works:

"Yea..Lin got 21 pts. So what harden still got that high 33pts on the team. Harden is still the one rockets Fans will praise."

What are you trying to say here? Are you implying that one can't be a Lin fan and a Rockets fan at the same time?

You don't really have to answer, these questions are rhetorical. But please don't misquote me again.

  86. Gawd... McHale seems like a nice enough guy and I think he maybe a good team "leader/motivator..." I dunno exactly how he does off the courts. But, he and Sampson's sub pattern are soooo frustrating to watch. This is the same shit I saw last time they played. POP's subs saved energy for his starters for the 4rth quarter while Mac's subs completely destroyed stamina of his starters... results: tanked out in the 4th quarter and completely tanked out in OT. Tonight is the same f'ing shit.
Played Harden 41!!!!! count em 41!!! minutes.
I hope for sake of the Rox and Harden's KNEES McShit will wisen up and rest these guys.
And this is with them playing OKC the next DAY.

I SAY Fire MCSHIT. Even if you lose ONE game it's not the end of the world. just a few minutes here and there in the timely spots can really refresh your starters.
I've been saying the same thing for the last 4wks. Poor Sub patterns and poor Timeouts manifested over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Did Jlin hurt his wrist? I saw him hold it couple of times...hmmm

But got to give it to Spurs, in the last minutes, they played better D and converted as well. Their ball movement and court spread are better.

Some matches are just tough, atleast ROX didnt give up and was always on the bounce. But the entire team need to have more of Defence mindset, not just JLin alone.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If 1st quarter was even, Rox would have won this game.

I blame Harden for first quarter's massacre. JLin having to come back and catch the team up, fking bullsh*t.

I am FULLY convinced Harden cannot be in charge against any team with smart coaches, you need Lin. When Lin is in charge, pace picks up, ball moves. Harden in charge, you get stuck in halfcourt sets and they get killed...And you are left with a giant blackhole on defense.

Lin + TD was a great answer...But soon as they catch up they put Harden back in...Pop sees right through that bs and exploits Harden all night.

Guess what OKC is going to do tomorrow? Exploit Harden like the defensive whore and offensive ballkiller he is.

      Delete
    3. Why not play Greg Smith when Duncan was on the bench?
Why not rest Parsons and more importantly, Harden?
No can play 41-43 minutes per night in this run and gun style of play and expect to finish strong. NOT Even half court offense starters can handle those kind of minutes.

      Delete
    4. First, most NBA people think like Jon Barry and think Lin is a scrub. Whether it's Jlin's style of play, his skillset, his perceived lack of smooth style of play, they don't have the guts to let Lin lead. Lin just has to play so great till it dawns on a GM to let Lin have a go.

Harden will forever be what he is. He is not a ballhog. But he is told to be the "spear" and the team's Lebron so what's he gonna do? Defer to Lin? It is what it is....

      Delete
    5. I guess Rox will never win a championship in the next 3 years. Lin is better off somewhere else then.

Harden != LeBron...Cause LeBron can score, and he HELLUVA VERSATILE DEFENDER...

      Harden can't defend my dog.

      Delete
  92. man.. Harden you need to pass the ball man

    ReplyDelete
  93. Too many turnovers. Poor perimeter defending the 3s. Too much Duncan inside. SAS played a good game and Rox didn't have enough horses to run with them. Played hard and right to the end so have to give the Rox that. Chandler - looks like he's playing for his next contract.

I gave props to the coaching in the previous game but today's rotations were ??? Where was Greg Smith? I thought TD was alright and they should have played 3 guard more. Morris disappeared.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. One of the big problems against SAS is that they are one of few teams that can play at Rocket's breakneck pace.

Except SAS do it with finess.

Look at their sets...Just absolutely beautiful. And don't even get me started on their perimeter rotations, its clockwork. Rox looks lost at times running and chasing the ball like bunch of kids after an ice cream truck.

      Add to Harden's blackhole defense...Sigh.

Even then Rox has a chance thanks to JLin, for as much crap I give for JLin's every mistake, I am fully convinced if he was put in charge the whole game Rox would have won.

But the suspect rotations and Harden's blackhole defense...And predictable offensive sets.

Gawd let Lin do his job and run the team!

      Delete
    2. Yeah, agreed, one other note is that we missed alot of 3s and they made it count on 3s!

      Delete
    3. They would have won the first game (38 points and still Lin didn't really dominate the ball in the first half). But not this one. Spurs and Duncan were just too good tonight.

If Houston had a dominant low-post scorer like Lamarcus Aldridge or Al Jefferson, then they would have won, but a guard-driven team won't win without a little luck (cold opponents' shooting, friendly/fair refs).

      Delete
  94. This was a good loss, if there is such a thing.

The Rockets got punched in the mouth early and fell behind big, but then they landed their own haymakers and came back, led by none other than Jeremy Lin. Lin played a hell of a game tonight, nothing at all to be ashamed of. He played with swagger and showed brass balls. In that second quarter comeback Lin was a freaking beast!

The Spurs couldn't miss all night, yet the Rockets hung with them most of the game. But alas, the Spurs are just so so good. Really fun game to watch, but on to the next game!

    1. The Spurs were on fire tonight. They are feeding off of everyone including the refs and the announcers.

    2. Feeding off the refs hahaahahaha!

      I completely agree.

    4. Yeah I think Spurs are like 3rd in the league in scoring @ 104.9.... really fun game to watch!

  95. Well, after watching this game, it becomes quite apparent that for us to become a truly contending team, we will need a third star; either at center, or most likely at power forward. Kevin Love is great, but if I'm honest I'm thinking if only Amare Stoudamire would remain healthy for the next two years, he'd be perfect... It's a risk I know, but think about it: he plays the pick and roll perfectly and we know he'd fit quite nicely with JLin, so how about it? What do you think?

    1. LBJ. Solve a lot of problem. But that is too easy and not realistic. What really need to happen is the Houston bench need to develop into a good 2nd unit. When more than 2 of the starters are not doing well, at least the bench can help. Tonight, there was no help from the bench except TD.

I think STAT is so overvalued at his contract that there is no way he will be a Rocket.

I would love to get Love. We'll see if that plays out; I think chances are slim, but then again maybe there's the McHale connection.

    3. Heh, I agree with you, we need a much more reliable bench that can stand up when needed. It's just that it seems that the truly great teams in the NBA have three go-to guys, and we only have two. Yes, Parsons is doing well, but he's not a go-to guy. I mentioned that because of the news that the Knicks are trying desperately to unload Stoudamire to anyone for anything. They know he and Carmelo will never work out so they're just trying to make him go bye-bye whichever which way they can. I know he's a liability vis-a-vis his knees, but when he's healthy he's perfect for a Jeremy Lin based offense, and let's be honest, we need someone that can play solidly against the Tim Duncans and Kevin Durants of this world...

    4. All we need is a good coach like Pop.

    5. agree on iHoops, plus one scoring big swingman who can play both PF and C - my votes go to Jefferson or Millsap. with regards to PG, hopefully Beverley's a good sub coming from the bench.

    6. Heh I agree with you all, it's just that I feel that we need someone that can play the pick and roll well with Jeremy. If only we had that, I feel that we would be pretty much unstoppable. The pnr is tailor-made for Jeremy , and do you think Millsap or Jefferson could play the pnr decently enough?

"All we need is a good coach like Pop."

Heh, you might as well add "all we need is a good PF like Duncan".

We could do far worse than McHale. But for fun, now that there are all these available names being thrown around in AJohnson's wake, who would you like to have instead? Gotta pick someone other than Phil ;).

  96. 3 Games in 4 nights. The Rockets just couldn't keep up with that torrid pace of play. Where as the Spurs is on a home stretch playing just one game at home on Wednesday night. Tired legs leads to missed shots and turnoer. I thought the Rockets played well as a team. Spurs is just a solid veteran team. Just chalk up tonight's loss as a SCHEDULE LOSS. Of the three Spurs games this season, this has been the best team game the Rockets has played.

I dunno, I kind of have a soft spot for the OT game :)

    2. Schedule loss... yes in part, but mostly poor coaching. namely subbing but many other areas as well. McHale WILL NOT have much post season success. I hate this Rox talents get wasted by such an Idiot. I hope the someone in the organization will confront this issue. I wish it was just sub pattern, but it's coaching in general as I have pointed in previous threads which is distressing.

    3. @NOM, definitely the OT game was my favorite LIN game! I thought Harden probably put a little too much on himself and PRESSED in the 4th quarter. I think this is where the lack of time to develop on-court CHEMISTRY between Lin and Harden really shows. I think Harden will figure out how to pick his spots and trust Lin more if he is playing well... part of his job responsibility that comes with a 5/80 paycheck is to lead the team to win!

    4. Yep OT was the best...But Rox sucks in OT.

If lin didnt underestimate green, would have been Rox win. Not blaming anyone, the loss wasn't on Lin, just saying it could have been won if he didn't let green disrupt him...Maybe used the PnR...Or better yet, dribble lower...

    5. Kenoshi, all 4 of Green's 3 in 1Q came with Harden playing non-D on him. The only good thing was Harden got 2 fouls called on Green and he had to sit.

  97. Folks, Rockets no answer for Tim Duncan and Parker PnR. They had Jeremy on Parker, fighting to get through screens, and many times Parker would just take nice uncontested jump shots. When this happens, don't you double team a PnR? Otherwise, it's 2 on 1. Brink someone in to help guard the PnR like the Heat.

I have to give it to the Spurs, they shot the 3-ball lights out tonight. Green was 4 fo 4 in the first quarter I think. When the Spurs shoot this well, and the Rockets center position was nil tonight, there is little chance of winning. Asik was horrible, can catch nor finish. Aldrich, was lost, and not a scorer or good PnR player. I would much rather have Smith in there to Pulverize the Spurs. :) He gives good effort.

    1. Duncan got away with a lot of moving screens when he set the pnr's for parker. they got a ton of points of these no-calls

    2. I noticed the same thing. Jeremy ate a lot of Duncan's armpit hair. Sorry for the crass imagery...

  98. I kept posting same suggestions over the last few days.
Rockets defense against long range shooters is poor. Only Parson and Jeremy raise their hands to defend. Harden is the worst one. He is a great scorer and can not foul out. It's not too much to ask by raising your hand to defend. Is it? Sometimes, you need to run over/jump higher to block the views. I noticed 60% of the time that worked. Not everybody is Ray Allen. Most of them will fail. Harden were double team many times and he had no way to pass out. Someone has to come & get the ball. There got to be one free man. I have noticed it time &time. Do the coaches notice that? They lost this game on 1st qtr. Green had those shots way too easy. Jeremy Lin, take care. you guys have a tough game tomorrow. Please let your coaches work on these two issues.

    1. Its not just the hands but they have to stay closer to their man. Harden was playing off Green so much it was a joke, and it wasn't because he was help defensing either. Just lazy D. And that foul with the shot clock winding down and Parker trapped, that was a brain fart.
