not too big on the area code thing...kind of excludes us that don't really live in houston but are just jeremy fans. something with his name is better.
BTW good tweet of JLin being more active in practice.
Daryl Morey @dmorey Very happy w/@JLin7 & he keeps getting better-very active in practice 2day MT @sidmufc How happy are you with Jeremy Lin's production so far
Luckily, JLin and Harden's numbers are not 6 and 66 respectively. Otherwise, you'd get 666!
And if you add in Omar Asik to Lin and Harden, you could use "Omar Lin Harden" as a nickname, which strangely enough sounds like "Osama Bin Laden." ;-)
Nemo, surely there are aspects to draw from in addition to the racial element?
Many Lin fans are tired of the media's preoccupation of Lin's race as opposed to his play, or offended by ignorant application of racial stereotypes; yet much of the suggestions you offered seem to fall in the same mold, reducing Lin/Harden to some racial caricature.
I know it's all done in good spirit, I just thought we'd see more variety and creativity that's all.
It's racist if we CAN'T poke fun at ourselves or let others rib me.
One of my best friends is a good ol' Southern redneck from Virginia (his self description). He calls me "Chinaman", which I thoroughly enjoy. I try to tell him that I'm a country hillbilly, especially since I live in the sticks.
So when we gig together, we are the CHINABILLIES!!!
thats the problem, way too much tolerance on this poking fun stuff in regards to Asians. its no wonder an espn writer thought a headline story like that would be acceptable by the general public. and sadly it nearly was.
Off topic but anyone notice that when Lin makes a nice assist, the scorer rarely turns and points to Lin like common basketball etiquette dictates? I think this team actually doesn't seem to have a lot of fun together even when they are winning. Not a lot of smiles on good plays.
- a fabulous but forgotten American karate movie from the 80s starring a Olympic medal gymnast using his amazing gymnastics to kick and punch his way through the imaginary country of "Parmistan!!!l
These nicknames and puns are such gimmicks it reminds me of the new york media all over again with the "linsanity linsanity linsanity!" stuff. Why can't they just be known as jeremy lin and james harden and for their basketball skills?
Remember how you felt about JLin when he was coming up, during Linsanity? THAT WAS REAL. IS REAL. Organic, not manipulated. [Here's Rushkoff talking about how JLin's emergence was 'Occupy'-like in its structure, the 99%. JLin's always been a Systems thinker, a de-centralizer, a distributor.]
You're disillusioned by the commercialization. I know it looks like he's been co-opted by the mainstream. Please give it some time. Let's see how things turn out in Houston. His role is evolving, but he's still the SAME JLin, Nemo...
Thanks for the feedback and for providing some real conversation. Hoped you enjoyed the Halloween excerpt. There will be more to come if you are interested. :)
Maybe we should forget about the backcourt nickname. They don't play that well together so to combine their numbers is just odd at the moment. Jlin just gotta play his style of basketball and have fun. Be selfish and dominate. That's when it's really fun to watch.
713 - pretty darned good.
ReplyDeleteI call Lin and Harden the "Hardliners".
"Hardliners" hardened up and ready to lin :)
DeleteMost Rockets fans would probably just call them Rush Hour Reloaded.

Delete713 is cool but a bit esoteric. I believe most rocket fan sites and the media have already labeled them rush hour.

Deletebe patient and be happy on the progress, @neph :)
DeleteChris Paul took 2 seasons in 2010-2011 to fully recover from his meniscus surgery.
you don't want him to overdo it in the beginning and reinjure the knee after 25 games. Real haters will come out of the woods to say "I told you so".

agreed and well said. all in good spirit can easily and usually does turn annoying and racist.

DeleteI hate these puns. Just call them Lin and Harden, the dynamic duo or something.
ReplyDeleteLike ABC Baller, I hate these puns. It is not my thing.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to have a 3-0 record than a cool nickname.
I just have to settle for 3-1 after the nuggets game.
DeleteMy proposed nickname for Lin and Harden: "Those Two Guys Who Play for the Rockets."
ReplyDeleteIt will be marketing gold! Guaranteed.
Off topic but anyone notice that when Lin makes a nice assist, the scorer rarely turns and points to Lin like common basketball etiquette dictates? I think this team actually doesn't seem to have a lot of fun together even when they are winning. Not a lot of smiles on good plays.

LOL! i remember seeing that clip in one of bill simmon's column on the olympics. freakin' hilarious - random pommel horse in the middle of nowhere.

Berry Gordy's "The Last Dragon" was one of my favorite movies of all time!
