Another Step in the Right Direction

Very good game tonight by JLin and the Rockets. They were expected to win and did so showing some nice signs as a growing young ball club. The next 6 games should be a true measuring stick to see where JLin and the Rockets stack up:

11/28/12 Rockets @ Thunder 5:00 PM (PT)
12/01/12 Rockets vs Jazz        5:00 PM (PT)
12/04/12 Rockets vs Lakers    5:00 PM (PT)
12/07/12 Rockets @ Spurs      5:30 PM (PT)
12/08/12 Rockets vs Mavs      5:00 PM (PT)
12/10/12 Rockets vs Spurs      5:00 PM (PT)

vs Raptors JLin's line:

16pts
10 asts
4 rebs
3 steals
3 TOVs
7-9 fg-fga
1-2 3P-3PA

Pretty sweet line and I didn't think he played all that better than some of his previous games except he hit his open jumpers. The NY game really got the monkey off his back. He looks so much more relaxed now with his shot. JLin and some good team defense stifled Kyle Lowry as well. Also, Jeremy showed he is regaining his explosiveness with a nice steal and slam near the end of the game.

  1. i didn't see the game today. anybody has a vid of JLin's dunk?! i just saw the highlights from nba.com and it didn't show it. 'twas a nice dish to Asik though for that wrap around the defender pass. the rockets backed Lin up during the Knicks' game and i expect them to do the same for JHarden during the OKC game. actually i am a NYK fan, followed JLin and i cheered for JLin against NYK. peace out.

  2. To put things in perspective:

They were facing the defenseless Raptors (3-12).

The next six games are against more experienced and much better teams. It is really going to be a challenge.

Against the Thunder, Thabo can really guard Harden. Don't expect a tired Harden to score more than 25 points. Also, rebounding may be a challenge since the frontcourt of the Thunder is pretty good. They have length and ATHLETICISM. Ibaka will be a game changer due to his shot blocking prowess. The easy baskets the Rockets scored against the Raptors will be limited for sure.

They also have the best pure scorer in the league. Expect Durant to have a 30+ game. expect the rested Westbrook and Martin to give the Rockets some trouble. Lin needs to be focused defensively against the Westbrook. He can accelerate anytime he wants. You want Westbrook to shoot a lot of jumpers so Lin should be contented in giving Westbrook some space to prevent Westbrook from using his speed advantage over Lin.

The schedule of the Rockets is TOUGH. I can't imagine the blowouts that will occur. anyways, the Rockets is rebuilding and the youngest team in the league so there is no point in expecting a win over those better teams. Four games are against championship caliber teams.

There wil be two games in the schedule above where I will be rooting against Lin's team. Sorry nothing personal but I'm a Spurs fan first and a Lin fan second.

    1. You finally showed your true colors, nep! ;-p

Anyway, the Spurs are simply too deep and too experienced for the Rockets to handle. I just hope that it would not be blowout losses.

I think 2 wins out six in that stretch would be very good in my book. I wouldn't be surprised at a six game losing streak.

I'm actually expecting 0-6 or 1-5 if they can beat Utah.

    4. 0-6 is a real possibility.

I also LOVE watching the Spurs but I will be rooting for the Rockets for those matches! However, I don't really see the Rockets as having much of a chance against the Spurs at all, especially since Parker has been amazing recently.

      Delete
    5. It's 100% OK to be a Spurs fan rooting against Lin as long as that's not being used as an excuse to flame Houston, its fans, and its franchise.

Any Jeremy Lin team is going to be solid defensively. Against top opponents, Lin's Rockets have demonstrated shutdown capability as far as Lin goes. He is the only defensive perimeter stopper in the entire NBA.

I do agree with neph's prior assessment that Parsons and Harden will likely struggle against these top teams. Parsons is not much of a defender and Harden tends to go into hero mode when the going gets rough.

What Lin can do is continue to play his low usage high efficiency game. Even against these top opponents, Lin can do that. He just needs to continue attacking and hitting his easy shots.

      Delete
    6. Interestingly, Lin's minutes and slowly increasing usage is quite similar to Harden - Harden's previous 2 seasons had him at 19% and 21% USG - and Harden excelled in that low (relatively speaking) usage high efficiency role.

I have to disagree with you on Lin being the "only" defensive stopper in the NBA though. You don't think Lebron James is a defensive stopper when he feels like it?

      Delete
    7. Or even the usual names like Tony Allen. And what about Thabo Sefolosha? He was pretty darn good against the Spurs (who I was rooting for) in the WCF

    8. The Knicks beat the spurs are San Antonio. If the rockets lose, that will say alot about the rockets defense+offense compared to the Knicks

    9. At** San antonio. If we lose to them, the Knicks will think they're better!

    10. The Knicks also beat the Heat. Does that mean they are better than the Heat? NO WAY.

The Clippers luckily beat the Spurs. Does that mean the Clippers are better than the Spurs? HELL NOOOO!

Hawks defeated OKC once this season.

The Rockets are not better than the Knicks.

NBA games are about match-ups. Some teams have specific weaknesses and strengths. Soem teams may luckily beat the better teams.

So, if you're implying that the Knicks are better than the Spurs just because they got lucky then you are strongly mistaken.

      Delete
    11. It means they CAN be better than the Heat. Sports are unpredictable but if you watched that game, they deffenitally earned both wins againbst Mia and the spurs. The spurs game was a true dogfight back to back but solid performances from both teams and thet Heat game, well the way the knicks played they deserved to win it. They were FLAWLESS on both ends. I knew they couldnt play like that every night but they can do it. I've only saw the Heat play as good and flawless as the Knicks played that night, a few times. Knicks were unbeatable on both ends against the Heat.

If you're looking for a pro Knicks fight to degrade Lin, you've come to the best AND worst place here.

    16. The Knicks have a good record.

      Great.

And for one game only, the Rockets LINBARRASSED them.

Veteran NBA fans don't read into media creations like "statement games" or "proving a point" or "Knicks are better off without Jeremy Lin and Jeremy Lin is better off without the Knicks". All that drivel is media based imaginary garbage designed to invent stuff that makes sportswriters feel more important about themselves.

For longtime fans like me, the only thing that matters is the execution on the court. Lin has teally begun to execute in the last few games. Meanwhile the Knicks have some adjusting to do as opponents clamp down on their ball movement and the injuries start to pile for that aging veteran team.

  4. I took the time to re-watch the game on league pass.... and I can verify one(1) assist that they robbed Lin of (3rd period at 10:41 assist on Patterson's 2-point shot).

I couldn't verify one more assist somewhere and one stolen because the league pass didn't show 100% of the game because of the adds/commentary.

The reason why I thought the scorekeeping skipped Lin's 2 assists and 1 stolen was because I missed the first 20 minutes of the game, so I checked the boxscore first and I didn't see the above changes in Lin's stat reflected. However, I could only verify the missing assist in the 3rd period (I think the assist on Parsons' 3-pointer was eventually reflected). I'm certain that Lin got robbed of one stolen but I couldn't verify that, so that will be considered a non-miss. I wish the game is shown 100%.

    1. Hey bro, just a heads up - the noun for "steal" in basketball terms is also "steal". (In normal usage it's "theft".) Just in case you decide to write in or something. :)

      Delete
    2. BTW.... I just realized that it's important to keep this in mind: I noticed that sometimes the boxscore's stat update is AHEAD OF what's shown on the League Pass. Therefore, the scorekeeping regarding Lin's Stolen count is probably fine.

Since I now know that they can make mistakes, I think it's best to record Lin's stats on the good old fashion paper - but WITHOUT looking at the boxsccore since it's often ahead of what's showing on the LP.

      Delete
    3. Who is supposed to ensure accuracy of the scorekeeping? Morey is the GM of the Rox so naturally he's supposed to be the one overall responsible for any "blunders" made on the Rox home turf, right? Numerous occasions these scorekeepers have blatantly fooled the world by shifting the stats around without getting any penalty? Come on Morey, you can do better than that.

Also, I can't help thinking about this conspiracy theory: Any possibilities Morey sets the tone to stat-pad for Harden? If I were Harden and come to know about the stat padding, I'd immediately demand the FO to stop such nonsense!
I hope I'm wrong, dead wrong!

    4. People, you got to stop taking this Stat mistakes seriously.

      @janelin7

Now you are just being paranoid and annoying.

Steals are very hard to assess. Sometimes, the one that knocked the ball isn't the one who grabs the ball.

Let us remember that the game occurs so quickly. Especially when the plays occur so fast, mistakes sometimes are inevitable.

Although I dislike Morey, I'm not going to blame him for this minor mistake. Do you really think Morey controls those people?

Stats do not matter - Even Lin agree with this.

They won, what else do you want?

      Delete
    5. @Neph,

Annoying? Who can be more annoying than keep telling Jeremy what to do and keep saying Knicks are soooo good?

Stats do matter if not why do we have stats keeping in the first place? why not just have the score of each game shown which team won, that's it?

      Delete
    6. We need to remember that Morey is the co-chair of MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. For someone who advocates advanced statistical analysis to gain an advantage in identifying the VFM players, Morey is well aware of the importance of data accuracy.

      Delete
    7. Before you bombard us with your conspiracy theory, let us look at the facts.

-Lin should have had 17 points. Without the replay, the 3pointer looked like a 2pointer. Also, it was the referee's judgment that prevailed and not the stat organizer's. So you still think it is Morey's fault?

Start your whining if this trend continues for the next games.

Haven't it occurred to you that it just happened in this game?

Did it happen the previous games? No

BTW, I never knew telling the truth annoys you.

      Delete
    8. If you read the previous posts you would have noticed some errors did take place in previous games.

Most fans here hold the same opinion that Jeremy isn't being treated fairly by the referees since last season.

If you are a true Jeremy Lin fan, you would remember how critics harp on his TOs, this season, you'd want to see him do well in all aspects including less TO.

Do you understand advanced statistical analysis?

And, I'm telling the truth, that annoyed you too?

      Delete
    9. Oh, FYI, I don't mind being labeled paranoid for the sake of Jeremy's best interests! What about you? Are you a true Jeremy Lin's fan?

      Delete
    10. neph, you advocate distorting the statistical truth because it's been used against you as a weapon so many times.

Only you would argue that an assist that actually happened and was credited to Lin should NOT be recorded. That's because it's in your interest to LIE when it comes to flaming Lin and his fans like janelin7.

Stats mean NOTHING to you, but they mean everything to REAL fans of the game who are trying to evaluate Lin without the anti Houston anti Lin hate bias that you harbor against Lin and his fans. That's why real fans like JaneLin7 and ztrta and myself want to see the truth accurately depicted in a nonbiased way.

You want to argue that stats lie. Even so, even bad stats paint a very WONDERFUL picture of Lin's progress over the last few games.

    12. It's one thing to advocate that Lin should get the stats he legitimately deserves. It's quite another to insinuate that Daryl Morey conspired with NBA officials to rob Lin of his due. Moreover, since Lin is basically the "steals" guy on the team, Morey won't take that particular stat away from him, surely?

    13. My main annoyance is that the Rockets were the team that really gave Lin a chance after the Knicks, gave him money, and even though his role is secondary to Harden's, nevertheless have a vested interest in seeing him develop and succeed. 17. I assuming you're referring to Neph and not to me!

In any case, missed assists are really common in the NBA. It's one thing to write to the NBA to have it corrected (and apparently they sometimes are) and it's another to say that one of Lin's bosses may be implicit in deliberately robbing Lin of his stats. The usual idea is that you get more lenient assists at home. But it's not always true. Steve Nash in Phoenix for a couple of seasons averaged fewer assists at home than on the road - and I don't think that is due to fact he plays more poorly in Phoenix.

      Delete
  5. Hitting Js and a sighting of his off-the-ball game were the 2 exciting changes from Lin. Scoring inside, steals, rebounds, playmaking, running the offense, and running the break are things Lin was already doing well - when he was given the ball so he could do them.

My criticism has been focused on how Lin was being used as games moved on, especially down the stretch of close games, where his role has been taken away and his touches reduced. The Raptors game wasn't close down the stretch, but they did make a late run, and I was keen to see how they used him when doubt crept up about the outcome. Lin got touches, and that was a big step in the right direction. The ball did move away from him as the game moved on again, but this time, the ball went back to him. Progress.

Facing good teams will be a good test in that they're more likely to be closely contested games where the Rockets coaches will fall back on what they consider to be their bread-and-butter, which should include Lin with the ball. I want to see the ball back in Lin's hands in close games against good teams. His rep has taken a blow this season and it's time to build it back up. Sharing centerstage with Harden is fine, but being made an afterthought without a fair chance to change minds is not.

"My criticism has been focused on how Lin was being used as games moved on, especially down the stretch of close games, where his role has been taken away and his touches reduced."

I share this concern as well. I did pay heed to your offense stats request from a few days ago, and while what I'm about to post is likely nowhere near as thorough as you probably want at least it's a nugget. Keep in mind that as I just looked these up, they include the last two games(which for Lin was pretty good), so if you are using them to try to see what coaches are/were thinking, take that into account.

I'm only going to post the main plays for the what I consider the 3 main offensive players (Lin, Harden, Parsons). MM is impressive as can be, but he doesn't start (although he gets a lot of minutes, I'm just too lazy right now).

I'll report the type of play, the percentage that play represents for the player's offense (shots), the points per play for that particular play, and their rank if relevant.

      Lin

      PnR (ball handler) 29.6% 0.8 41
      Spot up 29.1% 0.91 92
      Transition 16.1% 0.91 62
      Iso 11.1% 0.09

      Harden

      PnR 32.8% 1.09 4
      Iso 24.7% 0.86 17
      Transition 19.3% 1.18 29

      Parsons

      Spot up 44.9% 1.03 59
      Transition 20.8% 1.13 37
PnR 9.7% 1.1 (unranked, I'm assuming not enough to qualify)

So my take is that for now, at whatever state of health you want to call it, Lin has indeed been most effective as a spot up shooter. While he is not bad at the PnR, Harden is far, far better. This only applies to shots taken by the handler, of course, and I don't have the metric that takes into account his assists, but hopefully this will put to rest any assertions that Harden can't/shouldn't play point guard in the Rox PnR heavy offense, or even Parsons for that matter. I think (hope?) now that Lin has started finishing again he can start taking some of the PnR load off of Harden (Harden has almost twice as many of these plays as Lin).

It's been pretty apparent reading a lot of these posts that I don't see things the same way a lot (most?) of you do. Before you take these numbers as some twisted backdoor Lin bash, you need to know that 1) these numbers are the reality of what has happened thus far 2) I would never bash Lin. Instead, I hope that some of you will see that Harden is not the villain, his use and his play is justified. If anything, I'm sure that he and the coaches would like for him to play less minutes, but Lin has to be ready for it...

Which leads me to the wise words of @via. Like she (he? sorry don't want to make a faux pas) said, let's be patient and see how this turns out. At least it will be fun.

I think I may be blacked out on league pass tonight, so hopefully you guys who are able to watch can give some good reporting. Or, I may have to venture back into Spanish streaming hell.

    2. the article can be summed up in a single word...DENIAL. If you even have a hint of a logical mind, you can't simply assign Shuhow's Linsanity stretch to plain luck. Sure the circumstances were lucky where the 12th guy on the bench who got recalled from the dleague actually got major minutes out of desperation. But you can't tell anyone with a brain that it didn't take significant skill to execute the way he did, to run an offense with 2nd unit players and win the way they did. Often we hear people describe that run as "magical". hogwash. those of us who followed Shuhow when he first got into the league knew he was a caged animal on that warrior bench. You can see flashes of his brilliance in the summer league dominatation of #1 pick John Wall. And this article wants to reinforce the notion that Shuhow's flame somehow burnt out? that he's deficient with his left hand? that he has terrible footwork? That his stat sheet exposes his true NBA ceiling and that the Rockets got a raw deal? You know, I expect this type of lame negative article blasting Shuhow from a guy who's in denial and doesn't want to be proven wrong. After all, Felton sucks and is TOTALLY overrated, and I'd expect to see more articles written about how HIS weaknesses got exposed...so how about that, Lamont-Hill? where's your equal opportunity criticism? joker.

    3. I expect this kind of racist article from the media nowadays.

After all, this is America where flaming Asian American men is considered normal. Asian American men aren't "supposed" to be good at sports and "shouldn't" be getting the girls, according to the racist media.

NBA executives are American for the most part, so they buy into the same racist garbage when they view Jeremy Lin. But it doesn't stop Lin from getting double teamed on both ends of the court, though.

I dare anybody to leave Lin unguarded just because he's Asian American.

      Delete
    4. right you are KHuang. Some of my friends who are in denial also, ridicule me about my die hard faith in Shuhow. These are asian guys who think Felton is the answer to delivering NYK the championship. And YET, Shuhow continues to get double teamed even during his shooting struggles (which are NO MORE!). and this is because the folks putting together the scouting reports know better than the average racist media person...which is that if you leave shuhow wide open, he will make you pay.

      Delete
    5. Lin's even beaten the double teams on defense!

Opponents try to pry Lin off the man he's guarding by sending pick after pick after him. It seems that the Rockets coaches have finally taken note of this and have adjusted Lin's game accordingly.

On this forum, Lin has received way too much criticism for leaving guys open. Lin should not be criticized for doing exactly what his coaches ask him to do.

    7. Felton is not a bad point guard and if the Knicks find the team to win a championship, they can do it with Felton. Felton just had a few bad games, well actually 1 agaionst the Nets. And his team let him down against the Rockets. Other than that Felton has been superb. To be honest, I think Knicks are better than Rockets. But Rockets are younger and have potential for the future but we cant say anythiong about the future for the Knicks because all there vets are signed short term and we dont know who will take there place. They may get Chris Paul this summer and another good PF to backup Amare.

      Delete
    8. How in the World will they get Chris Paul?

They don't have any cap space left.

      Delete
    9. Through trade, they are aloud to break the cap. Paul would hafto ask for this though. Plus he can take a shortened contract. They hinted this the past summer. And lots of the players on knicks roster are short term signings so they will have more cap than you think

      Delete
    10. Im not saying it's gonna happen, Im just saying dont think it CANT happen because it can/. This might not even be in the best interest of the Knicks. They might want to fill-up some depth around other areas of the team. Theres some good players on FA that are alot cheaper than CP3 would be. and they could get more for there money that way

      Delete
    11. dude, you're talking about gutting the knicks to get cp3 which won't free up nearly enough cap room to entice him. and what team is going to absorb stoudemire's "ridiculous" contract on a suspect back and bum knees? on top of that, you're downplaying the significance of the rocket's recent success by boosting the knicks on a JEREMY LIN fan site and you're asking US not to be biased? well played...

      Delete
    12. be all it would take is a trade. If CP3 told the clipers he didnt want to resign, they would trade him so they get back talent in return instead of losing him for nothing. Stoudemire for CP3 would sound nice to the clips if they knew they were losing cp3 anyway. Use your head. And stat isnt as hard to tarde as most make it seem, the knicks just haftp appear to be getting back less in return. for example, Knicks trading amare for marisse speights straight up, both sides would be happy. Amare isnt seriously hurt anymore keep in mind. and he had 1 off year. Ive seen much crazier deals go down

      Delete
    13. and stat isnt as hard to trade as most make it seem***

    21. Even the writer admits that Lin is at least slightly below NBA average PG (at the time he wrote the article) and can be an average NBA average PG -- that's a lot higher than a scrub. My opinion is if Lin can improve more on D (he's already a decent defender) and improve his shooting, he will be an above average NBA PG. I don't know if I can say at this point very confidently that Lin will one day become an All-star based on his basketball skills though. I would like to wait until Lin plays in playoff games before saying anything on this topic.

  7. Hey guys
This is a GREAT website to look at advanced stats and figure out Lin's game.

    http://www.nba.com/advancedstats/player.html#Jeremy-Lin|202391;year=201213;season=r

One thing that stands out is Lin's usage rate this year is only 18% compared to last year's 27%. This explains why last year Lin's per-36 is down from last year to this year. But Lin's turnovers are way down, assists to turnovers are better, rebounds are up, steals, etc.

Another interesting thing is if you compare his shooting from last yr to this yr, it shows that his shooting is really down just within the paint and in mid-range. His 3-pt shooting from the corners and non-3pt-corners is similar to last year. It's just his paint and mid-range game that has been off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lin most likely listened to Morey and McHale and abandoned his mid range game (bad idea IMO, and I hope it can come back when he realizes that he needs it if he wants to increase his volume of shooting), thus his struggle in that area. And his injury definitely affected his explosiveness, thus the struggle in finishing in the paint and it is slowly coming back.

      Delete
    2. We're not going to see Lin go back up to 27% USG for the foreseeable future (the only guards who play at least 25 mins a game above 26% USG are either all-stars, the best scorer on lousy teams and, uh, Jamal Crawford) but I predict that he will be at about 21% USG by the end of the season as his health improves.

  8. I just want to say something about the tough schedule coming up, and the recent developments about the team. THIS Rocket's team is not the same as the Rocket's team that opened the season. THIS Rocket's team is beginning to mesh, buy INTO the system, to realize their offensive potential, to understand the chemistry and the TEAM WORK it takes to finish games with a V. They understand their pace, and they go out there each night ready to take on challenges. They back each other up. They are FAMILY. And this is the single most important reason Shuhow was brought to Houston. to instill that belief and culture in his team. Now, onto OKC and all their weapons. I truly believe Asik will dominate on the glass. His low post play as of late has been All Star caliber. if the Rockets continue to spread the floor and shoot the high percentage...it's going to be a hell of a game. I agree with someone earlier, they need to attack the basket and keep westbrook out of the paint or at least settling for those off balance jumpers. another huge challenge is guarding kevin martin who is probably going to have a huge night. I like Kevin Martin, and i'm certain he will do well. Just can't give him the open looks. I think we have a good shot against OKC people. we've got the platinum pieces!

    1. The Rockets are superb defensively.

Jeremy Lin is the main reason why. Take him off the team and the Rockets would collapse defensively. Because of their defense, the Rockets can hang in there against any opponent.

Opponents are trying to shut down the lane against the Hardliners, but the Rockets frontcourt has being scoring BIG. This will become problematic against the battleship teams that have All Star big men down low.

Still, the Rockets are a force that no team can sleep on. They are the NBA's most dangerous sleeper team because they can beat anybody BADLY on any given night. Just ask the Knicks and Bulls!

      Delete
    2. I disagree about one thing. Asik's low post play is not all-star caliber. Why did you think his low post play is good?

His rebounding has been terrific and his finishing ability is also improving. But no way he's a low post threat. There were a couple of plays that he shot an ugly low post shot.

      Delete
    3. Again Khuang, you are being Biased. Lin is not all that on defense at all.

      Delete
    4. I think Asik's low post play is all star caliber because he's freakin awesome in the low post and he scores points, in addition to what you say, he controls the boards, and plays sick defense.

      btw...Shuhow is an All Star.

      Delete
    5. Actually, his defense against the likes of Howard is pretty bad. His foot speed is not that great.

He's a good Help defender though.

      Delete
    6. perhaps he's not as gifted athletically as d12, but he poses a significant problem for opposing centers and people driving the lane. he's craftier than most playing his position. check out how he ran point center last night for the nice dish to Shuhow for the sweet reverse layup. This guy IS all star caliber. non-believers, you can check his stats.

    7. Billy Chung, welcome to this board.

You're new, but already you don't seem to understand that this is a Lin fansite where people are over the top when it comes to assessing Lin ACCURATELY. Thus I'm gonna call you "Rook" till you learn a few things about Lin and this place.

Rook, you should know that Jeremy Lin was the best all around point guard defensive player in the NBA last season. His individual numbers were at the top of all NBA pgs and his effect on team defense was equally dramatic.

Also rook, you should actually watch the Lin games. Barring the Chicago game where it still took 20+ shots for Nate Robinson to score his 20 against a likely flu virused Lin, it's almost impossible to beat Jeremy Lin off the dribble. It takes two men working against Lin to score off him, a big man screening and a quick perimeter guard. Lin shut down Lowry last game and shut down Felton too, though Felton threw in a few points against Toney Douglas with the game out of hand.

Also rook, this is NOT a Knicks fansite. In fact, most of us here are INCENSED at not just how they kicked Lin off the team but continue to flame him jn the papers. I'm originally from NY, so no one can accuse me of not understanding the toxic NY media's anti Asian American stance.

Rook, you've had your head filled with anti Lin haterade from the media. But you're in the right place. Here, you'll get schooled out of your INCORRECT notion that Lin isn't "all that" on defense when statistics clearly indicated that he was the BEST defensive PG in the league last year and seems to be on pace to be even better this year.

Keep in mind, rook, that the majority of Lin fans here REALLY know the game and won't hesitate to use stats and video to prove their points. This is a Moneyball forum. So enjoy your way around here and LEARN.

    9. Ok Billy Chung, you've opened your eyes about this place.

I won't call you "rook" anymore. Welcome to this board. It's a GOOD place.

For the record, I appreciate you being a Nuggets fan. I'm not crazy about George Karl's coaching, however.

A George Karl team is a fastbreak offense team, even in the halfcourt. They wear teams down on sheer grit and athleticism in the regular season. Unfortunately that also results in tons of injuries, particularly for Karl's big men who are constantly playing recklessly due to his coaching orders.

In the NBA, sheer grit and athleticism and flying up and down the court are not enough. There needs to be proper pacing in order to preserve bodies and score against tough defenses. I have been a big fan of Kevin McHale's Rockets offense because McHale has Lin playing at a WONDERFUL pace.

    14. Oh I dont know. Hmm... They have tough 5 games ahead of them. It is at OKC which is tough. And its a double header which also makes it tough. They can do it, its Hardens ex-team jus like they beat Lins ex team. If they play like that and all devote to having Hardens back like they did Lins, they can do it but its tough no doubt.

      Delete
    15. I agree with Billy Chung.

Lin is a great defender who'll make Westbrook shoot over him for points. In fact, I'll guess that Westbrook comes out firing against Lin just like in preseason. The more Westbrook shoots, the more it takes the ball away from Durant and Martin.

The wild card factor is Serge Ibaka. Just as Nicholas Batum had proven to be a Rockets killer because nobody can defend him, Ibaka could have a Batum like effect but on defense. Ibaka has a tendency to go crazy on defense, disrupting any opponent.

I don't think Lin will be affected defensively by OKC or any team for that matter. The Rockets coaches have Lin playing an intelligent form of low usage basketball that only asks Lin to hit open shots. But the other guys on the Rockets, specifically the Rockets frontcourt, could face serious problems if OKC sends in their one man SWAT team in Ibaka!

      Delete
    16. werd. i believe 2Pat is the xfactor. they really need his consistent presence down low to complement asik because ibaka and perkins won't make it easy. his post game and uncanny ability to connect from outside really poses a challenge for the okc bigs on D. they need to win the battle of the glass because KD and KMart will likely shoot lights out, and Rox must significantly limit those second or third chance opportunities and maximize their own. Just a prediction, but I think westbrook is going to struggle with an erratic shot and turn the ball over more often than he's used to. PLEASE don't leave KMart OPEN! Houston by one!

      Delete
    17. I'd be a crazy coach, not good for Lin.

I'd stick Harden on Westbrook, Lin on Durant, and Parsons on Sefolosha.

I'd also sic Lin on Kevin Martin. Lin shut down Martin in preason scrimmages. Nobody other than Lin can even slow Kevin Martin, let alone shut him down.

Were I Lin's coach, he'd be guarding Durant at the beginning of the game, Martin during the middle, and Westbrook at the end!!!

      Delete
    18. I like your coaching plan for JLin vs OKC. I think JLin can really put some impressive D on Durant, Martin, or Westbrook as long as he stick with them and not helping out. He has this tendency to always help out his teamate's man and leave his man open for an open shot. So yeah, if JLin commits to his man, there's no way that dude will have a big scoring night against JLin.

Then when I grew and gained muscle mass and dominated any athletic activity, not a single guy has EVER , EVER tease me about anything. So if there is any Asian guy reading this (doesn't matter if you're 8 years old or 40 years old), size and ability is just as important as believing in yourself. Don't let people pull you down. You are your worse enemy. Believe that you can and you will. Don't fall into the "Oh I'm Asian, I'm genetically predisposition to only excel in school." WRONG. You can, to an extent as determined by various factors, excel in anything you set your mind to. Conquer your mind and you will conquer it all.

  14. I noticed that when Lin plays well, I am in a better mood. That's sad. :)

I would give him A- for his performance against Toronto. I noticed that sometimes Lin's TOs come because he tries to pass too much even when he can get easy points. One thing I realized watching NBA games is that many of important contributions do not show up on stats numbers, such as quality of assists and certain things you do as a defender that leads to palming the ball or making the first pass that leads to easy pass for a dunk, etc.

One thing that is becoming very clear to me is that Lin knows how to control the tempo and rhythm of the game and he tries to involve ALL the players for a better synergy. These are subtle positives that you will not be able to notice unless you follow closely the effects that Lin has on the team game after game. It is this strength that impresses me most about Lin. If he can get to 45% plus on all his shots, he can achieve 18 points/9 assists level against most teams. Of course, you have to turn it one level up to do this against Miami, OKC or Spurs. I am looking forward to see how Lin and Rockets measure up against OKC and Spurs. Parker is my favorite PG because he's so crisp in the way he plays, no frills and wasted motions. I wish Lin was more like Parker in lay-ups and short shots.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. Predictable tendencies will be badly exploited by good defensive teams. Defenders can cheat more and get ready to jump into the passing lane if they know Lin will most likely pass the ball even when Lin's driving to the paint. Lin needs to keep his defenders more honest and show that he can score at will and willing so.

      Delete
    2. Get Lin a Tim Duncan to set picks and siphon off pressure if Tony Parker is the goal.

When I think of Tony Parkerr, I think of Tim Duncan setting a pick and then trailing behind ready to carch the bailout pass or follow up Parker's miss.

      Delete
    3. LOL, nice one KHuang. Well, I guess that was true for a while but Parker's jumper has improved a lot! Lin could learn from Parker in developing a formidable midrange game.

      Delete
    4. Parker has a more offensive skills at this point than Lin, even with or without Duncan. Not many PGs can do what Parker can do even if he is helped by having Duncan. Lin is at this point a distant 3rd or 4th option in Rocket's offense (whether by his choice or Rockets coaches' choice). Parker is either 1st or 2nd in most games that Spurs plays. To carry that burden and perform every day consistently is damn good. Put it another way, if Parker was in Lin's place on the Rocket team playing with Harden, Parker would be scoring over 20 points every game consistently.

      Delete
    5. Exactly, double wiffle. Parker combines a midrange jumper game with a slicing and dicing offensive game that is very effective even during playoff games against great teams. I am convinced that if Parker was on Rockets team, he would score a lot more points than Lin. I definitely put Parker in top 5 PGs group. In fact, Parker/Harden combo would be more effective than Lin/Harden combo in that opponents would be facing a truly double-threat.

      Delete
    6. However, I do note that Lin is still improving, whereas Parker probably has reached his top plateau as a player.

      Delete
    7. I don't agree that Parker would score more than Lin would if the two were traded for each other.

Nor do I agree that Parker and Harden would be better than Lin and Harden. Parker is nowhere in Lin's class defensively, nor does Parker make guys better the way Lin does. I view Parker strictly as a small scoring guard, not as a distributor or defender.

      cool.

      Delete
    8. I would put Lin's dribbling skills somewhere in the middle between Westbrook and Parker, with CP as the best dribbler. I am more interested in how fast Lin can improve and how high his ceiling limit is.

Again, although I enjoy watching great sport competition, the only reason I follow some NBA games is because Lin is playing, but I followed NBA from Magic Johnson/Larry Bird days.

      Delete
    9. I already know that you would disagree. :) I agree that Parker is a score first PG, but he can get more assists also if he were in Rockets type of team. I strongly disagree that Parker would not score more points if Parker were playing for Rockets. Parker would have score 30 or more in several games that Rockets played.

      Delete
    10. Context is important in the NBA.

I believe that Jeremy Lin could be scoring 20+ points, even for this Rockets team. The Rockets probably would've lost more games too.

Similarly, Tim Duncan is so overpowering on both ends that he's able to carry a team of D leaguers, role players, and rejects. Parker is the only player on the roster who is an NBA starter in his prime.

You have a higher opinion of Parker than I do, and I have a higher opinion of Lin than you do. GOOD.

      Delete
    11. I agree with KHuang about Parker. Duncan opens everything up for him, without Timmy Parker would be half as effective. He's no D-Rose or Westbrook with explosive athleticism and speed who can bully his way to the basket without help. Parker has always utilized screens and Duncan sets some of the best screens in the league for Tony and he is also a great finisher off the pick-and-roll which = more assists for Parker.

If he were on the Rockets in the same position as Jeremy he would struggle to maintain his same level of production as the Rockets have poor screen setting bigs who also stink in the pick-and-roll.

    12. I think we can all agree that any PG will benefit from playing with a future HoF centre. :)

However, I think the x factor today is Asik. Both Durant and Westbrook will do their usual things, but the Rockets just have to make sure that they don't have their "beast mode" games.

I think Asik can dominate the board, defense and offense, based on matchup. OKC may need to help on defense and packing-in the paint, so the rest of Rockets will have more open looks while OKC has less.

  18. Enthusiasm aside, I think Jlin's dunk was a promising sign of his explosiveness coming back, he took off from quite afar, I held my breath. This could translate to improvement in his overall play because he plays an aggressive uptempo style in every system that I've seen him play in. BTW, how many dunks has he had so far this year?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Judging from the postgame interview by Lin, it sounds to me like he was encouraged by the fact that he didn't force anything, stayed patient and let the game come to him. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes very few shots and prefers to be a glue guy from here on. Hopefully, he can up his assists rate even though his scoring will be down. I don't think he will ever put up the stats he put up during Linsanity as that was a time when his usage rate was extremely high. The Rockets are Harden's team and he will always dominate the ball. I'd be satisfied if Lin plays more like Nash who is an extremely efficient player.
